Hours of Shopping in Eindhoven

You’ve undoubtedly heard that stores in Eindhoven are closed on Sunday.  But this isn’t entirely true.  Dutch stores are closed approximately three Sundays out of each month, and once a month there is a koopzondag, when stores are open.  The exception is Amsterdam, where lots of things are open on Sunday.  In Eindhoven, even when most businesses would be closed, most restaurants are open on Sunday.  On which Sunday the stores will be open is a little trickier to work out because, depending on the holidays in the month, the koopzondag can fall on a different Sunday.

What you may not know is that a lot of businesses are also closed on Monday morning in Eindhoven.  There are exceptions, which include the grocery stores, but don’t head downtown on Monday morning expecting to get a lot done. As in the states, hair salons are also closed on Monday. This Monday morning could exist to offset the “koopavond,” which is on Friday nights, when many stores stay open later.

A recent exciting phenomenon is that some grocery stores, particularly Albert Heijn, are extending their hours into the evenings both during the week and on weekends.

Note that at times when many stores are closed, a single pharmacy is typically dedicated to be open.  See the Healthcare section for more details.
